The PetSafe Deluxe Outdoor Bark Control Birdhouse is an ultrasonic bark deterrent. Cleverly disguised as a birdhouse, the unit senses the dog barking and emits a high pitched noise, inaudible to the human ear, to stop the dog from barking.
The Second Generation PetSafe Outdoor Bark Control was launched in 2011. The new model includes a timer to allow you to switch the unit off during certain times and conserve battery power. And of course, the most visible change is that the units have gone from being a Tudor style bird house, to a Victorian style bird house!
Unlike a bark collar, the unit does not need to be worn by the dog – just placed in the vicinity of the barking activity. As such, it is often used by people wanting to quiet a neighbor’s dog.
The PetSafe PBC00-12788 emits an ultrasonic noise via a speaker on the birdhouse. Ultrasonic bark deterrents generally offer a very weak correction that works with only the most timid and compliant dogs. Their effect also tends to wear out with more persistent barkers. After a few weeks or months, dogs may find the ultrasonic noise less and less harsh and start to ignore it as they become desensitized.
The PetSafe outdoor bark control is also a non-discriminate bark deterrent. This means that the sound emitted will hit all dogs in the vicinity, regardless of which one is the guilty barker.
The PetSafe PBC00-12788 Birdhouse uses a microphone sensor to detect whether the dog is barking. The Bird House has a range of 50 feet. The disadvantage of microphone sensors is that they are prone to false alarms triggered by other loud noises like the bark from a neighbor’s dog. Unlike the outgoing model, you cannot reduce the range on the PetSafe Deluxe Birdhouse, which can exacerbate the false alarm problem.
Conversely, the 50 foot range can also be a limiting factor if you have a large yard. Because the PetSafe Deluxe Ultrasonic Birdhouse is located in a fixed position, multiple units may be required to cover larger areas. This is not the case with typical no-bark collars that the dog carries around with them. Also, if barking in the house is a problem as well, indoor units may be necessary.
There is a test mode that lets you ensure the system is working. When set to test mode, you ‘bark’ into the microphone and you should see a red light and hear a tone to indicate that the system is detecting your ‘barking.’
Battery & Timer
The PetSafe Outdoor Bark Control uses a regular 9V battery. We find the battery life to be around one month. To increase battery life, the new PBC00-12788 model includes a timer can be set to switch the system on and off automatically during the day. This allows owners to switch the bark control birdhouse off at night when the dog is not outside and when barking is not a problem.
The PetSafe Bark Birdhouse has a single LED light that flashes green to indicate that everything is working, and flashes red to indicate a low battery. The LED light glows solid red to let you know when it detected barking and sent out an ultrasonic correction, which is useful because of course you cannot hear the correction. An orange light tells you when the system is using the timer and is currently off.
Overall, we think that for most people an electric bark collar is a better long-term solution. The PetSafe Outdoor Bark Control birdhouse is really only worth trying on the most timid barkers or if you are aiming to deter the barking of a neighbor’s dog.
On the positive side, ultrasonic deterrents like the PetSafe Bird House produce very mild interventions and you may want to try this with a timid dog if you are concerned about using a stronger intervention like a static shock.
