The Dogtra YS300 is the little sibling of the large Dogtra YS500 and differs significantly from that model in more than just size. Most obviously the YS300 is smaller and will fit most dogs over 10lbs. The correction on the collar is also a little weaker than the YS500, but is partially made up for by the addition of a vibrating feature. Still, we would not use this on larger, hard headed dog with a high pain threshold like pitbulls, boxers, rottweillers, or german shepherds.
The YS300 uses a microphone to detect barks, rather than the vibration pad on the YS500. Microphone sensors generally are less discerning that vibration pads and can be set off by loud noise, other dogs barking, and by the dogs banging the collar against something like a hard floor. The YS300 has one of the more finely tuned microphones we have seen, but it is still prone to more errors than the vibration pad based YS500. In particular it is not a good choice where you have multiple dogs because it can be set off when they tussle or when the second dog barks.
You can select one of 6 correction levels using this simple and very intuitive dial. You can also switch the collar off, have a vibrate only mode (P), and a test mode (T) that makes the microphone more sensitive than usual. Testing the collar is easy, just set the collar to T, then scrape a coin along this ridged surface on the collar and you should see the light flash and feel the collar start to vibrate.
The YS300 is rechargeable like the YS500, but uses a better lithium polymer battery allowing the collar to be much smaller and lighter. Also recharge time is much faster, taking 2 hours instead of 10 hours. One downside of the battery, is that it only last about a week between charges, half as long as the YS500.
The YS300 also add a great vibration feature that is not on the YS500. The collar vibrates just before it corrects the dog. The vibration seems to work a treat on some dog where the correction fails. We suspect this works because the vibration is a little like another dog shaking them by the scruff, which is the way mother dogs correct their puppies. The timing of the vibration just before the correction is also a clever little touch, it makes the static shock correction seem a little worse because the dog anticipates it. The collar can be put in vibrate only mode, which is great for dogs that have been trained on the correction collar and only need a gentle reminder.
The YS300 comes with 5/8 inch prongs standard. The longer 1inch prongs for long hair dogs are $20 extra which is a little disappointing. The YS300 does come with some neat rubber prongs which deliver no correction but can be used with trained dogs that only need the vibration. The neat thing about the rubber prongs is that they are much less likely to react with the dogs skin and can be worn for much longer periods.
The YS300 is a small, rechargeable collar with a vibration setting. It is only let down by the microphone bark sensor. The microphone sensor is fine if you have just one dog, but if you have two dogs that like to tussle, look at something else.
